For as long as Mohawk Mountain has been a ski resort, it has also been a good neighbor. The commitment to philanthropy developed in the early days by Walt and Peg Schoenknecht has been embraced and perpetuated through today’s leadership by owners Carol Schoenknecht Lugar and Steve Hedden. Mohawk Mountain’s particular areas of interest are children, healthy lifestyles and Northwestern Connecticut, and they have quietly and generously shown their support for these issues in a variety of ways.
For the past 63 years, Mohawk Mountain has worked with the Cornwall Board of Education to make free skiing and snowboarding available to every student who is matriculated at Cornwall Consolidated School. Mohawk Mountain’s generosity has allowed CCS to take their physical education program to award-winning levels, incorporating skiing and snowboarding into their curriculum, as well as providing lift tickets to kids outside of school hours and on snow days. The cost to Cornwall kids to participate in the program: a friendly smile and hearty thank you when they receive their lift ticket!
In addition to the Cornwall program, which averages 100+ students every year, Mohawk Mountain offers a low-cost season pass for residents of the Region One School District who attend Region One schools. This generous discount is provided so that local children have access to one of their neighborhood’s most popular attractions – Mohawk Mountain. The number of Region One families purchasing discounted passes increases annually, keeping children active and engaged in winter sports. As a good neighbor, Mohawk Mountain supports many other Cornwall endeavors; most notably the Cornwall Volunteer Fire Department, with annual functions and skiing benefits, and the Cornwall Women’s Society Annual Rummage Sale. Mohawk Mountain staff also volunteers for numerous outside organizations and town committees.
Mohawk Mountain supports various regional agencies working with at risk children and young adults. Torrington Youth Service Bureau, Litchfield and Canaan Barracks of the Connecticut State Police, Fish of Torrington and others receive donations of ski passes, equipment and lessons, support for ongoing initiatives, and leadership in community campaigns. Mohawk Mountain is also proud to have hosted fundraising events for many non-profit and social service groups, including the MDA, American Cancer Society, and local civic organizations. In addition, Mohawk Mountain donates countless lift tickets in support of non-profits throughout New England.
Individuals requesting a donation in support of a non-profit fundraising event should provide the following:
A written request for donation, on company or event letterhead, detailing the date of event, community event is located in, and what population/group will benefit from the event. This letter should be submitted at least 3 weeks in advance of event, and should be addressed to
Deb Sanford, Office Manager
Mohawk Mountain
P.O. Box 27
Cornwall, CT 06753
Requests can also be emailed to office@mohawkmtn.com
Requested donations will be mailed, so please plan your request to accomodate delivery – donations cannot be picked up.
Mohawk Mountain continues to develop new opportunities to be a great neighbor, support children in Northwestern Connecticut, and promote a lifetime of good health and activity by developing a lifelong love of skiing and snowboarding.
We measure our donations in feet (of snow)… and we count our success in smiles.
